Corfu

Corfu is an island in the Ionian Sea which, with its satellite islands, forms the northwestern margin of the frontier of Greece. Historical influences from the ancient Greek, Roman, Venetian, French and English cultures have shaped the island's architecture, art and cuisine.

Corfu is a large island, unique in Greece for being mountainous and forested. It lies close to Albania.

There are a dozen attractive beaches and recreational communities along the northern shores of the island.

The entire Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO Heritage site with its dominating Venetian forts and its medieval lanes.

Corfu Town sits on a broad peninsula which terminates at the moat of the Old Fortress (dating to the 1200s), where a bridge leads to its successive arcades and plateaux.

The Old Fortress offers a scenic viewpoint of the port of Mandraki  and houses an archeological museum, archives, library, and offices of the department of culture and university.

At the Old Fortress is St. George Church, originally a garrison church for British troops but now a museum displaying icons from the Church of Agios Spyridon and works from local artists.

Kapodistriou Street and the Esplanade mark the edge of the main tourist area of Old Corfu.

A dense core of winding streets provide unique dining and shopping opportunities.

The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, which served as the British High Commission and later the Greek Royal Residence, now houses the Museum of Asian Art of Corfu.

Reminders of the British past are seen in the Victorian band stand in Spianada Square, at which the symphony offers free concerts, as well as the nearby cricket field.

Artworks throughout Corfu reflect its ecclesiastical, military and nautical history.

Dion Solomou is an ancient street that leads past numerous chapels and convents to the entrance of the New Fortress (dating to the 1500s).

Corfu Town's labyrinthine street are full of Venetian buildings, Byzantine churches and French-influenced esplanades.

The National Resistance sculpture is dedicated to the people of Corfu who lost their lives during the German occupation of WW II.

Near the Synagogue is a memorial to the Jewish citizens of Corfu who perished in the Holocaust.
